Australians love the Australian Football League (AFL) game. On Grand Final Day the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) hosts over 100,000 people to watch the spectacle live. The atmosphere is electric. The highest attendance at an AFL grand final was in 1970 when a record crowd of 121,696 spectators watched the game.
Essendon-supporting emus are making their way to the MCG to see their beloved footy team. On their way to the MCG they pass the immortalised Dick Reynolds, affectionately nicknamed 'King Richard' because of his exploits on the field. He played 320 games and kicked 442 goals in a 19-year career with Essendon that included three Brownlow medals in five years in 1934, '37 and '38, and seven best and fairest. They also pass Essendon full-forward, John Coleman, who kicked 537 goals in 98 games from 1949-54 before coaching the club to premierships flags in 1962 and 1965. Sadly he died of a heart attack in 1973, aged 44.
This print is printed in Tasmania by Full Gamut on 310gsm William Turner watercolour print paper with archival inks. The paper has the same texture as the paper I paint on. No wonder so many people ask me if the print is my original painting! This print makes a great gift for Essendon AFL supporters.
